week notes 5-10-25
October has come! Here is the first week notes of the month!
We've entered the month of my birth. Another year is getting ready to pass. I kind of got my birthday present today (even though my birthday isn't until the end of the month). On Friday, Woot had the switch 1 version of Trails Thru Daybreak 2 (Definitive Edition) for half price; it arrived today somehow (when I ordered it said next Friday) but my wife won't let me play until my birthday. I loved the first one so I'm excited for it!
We also visited the state fair today as a family. The kids were super excited about this but neither my wife or I were. We felt like we had to because we got notices from our kids school that both had art on display. My daughter in middle school definitely did - it was so fun to see! My son in third grade - not so much. The art teacher labeled another kids work (seemingly in a completely different grade) as his. He was super disappointed and I was a bit angry on his behalf but we made the most of the trip.
Standouts:
- My daughter's cat alphabet art
- The pineapple aqua frescas
- The rib plate my wife and I shared
- The Taro Bubble Tea
Disappointments:
- The mislabeled art!
- The transforming car (super lame)
The other big standout for the week was that my 91 year old grandfather had to have emergency surgery on Friday. Thankfully everything is OK and he seems to be OK. At that age - everything is kind of touchy.
what i wrote
- Today actually I posted about how we can really be firefighters online.
links worth sharing
- On protecting forgejo with Anubis. I'm running forgejo for my personal code repo but have it limited to my tailscale net in part because of this. I've thought about opening it up but hesitate to do it still...
- I posted about the rails/ruby drama last week. This post on DHH is super informative for that discussion as well...
- This site looks to be a really interesting cybersecurity library. I think its all on the up and up?
- I really appreciated Blake's take on LLMs.

- Blacksky.community: Blacksky is a black owned and run Bluesky alternative that connects with Bluesky. It's not fully separate quite yet but I'd trust it a lot more than Bluesky personally. And yes - I'm not black but they have two open PDSs for anyone. See more about that here.

A Christianity that promotes the interests of empire* is a Christianity that rides the back of the beast as the whore of Babylon.
