It's been a couple of weeks...but I'm back!

November is here. I missed the last week of October as far as Week Notes are concerned. It's been busy.

Last weekend was actually my birthday and that was a big part of why I missed. I'm deeper into my 40s now, ready (hopefully) for another year. As far as Birthdays go - it happened:

  • On Saturday I woke up early and took my son and daughter to a breakfast place that does gluten free better than most. We then headed to Trader Joes to get some fixins for dinner.
  • After that we headed home and I put a hatch green chili marinated pork butt in the smoker which took up the rest of the day (it finished about 7:30pm).
  • During the afternoon I helped my daughter finalize her sticker site (which will launch for pre-orders SOON!).
  • My wife got home from work between 7:30 and 8 and we had tacos from the smoked meat (and they were amazing).

My family got me a switch game (Trails through Daybreak 2) as did my parents (Fantasy Life i) so expect reviews eventually. They are both RPGs so it might take awhile. Sunday was spent at a fall festival which my son loved and my daughter...didn't. Oh I also setup a delta.chat relay on Sunday which is working great. Have moved a subset of my Signal contacts there and it seems to be working really well.

Yesterday was spent at a Halloween party in a friends neighborhood and restarting Stranger Things with my daughter (the latter continued today).

Lots of fun things but it is a bit hard to be overly excited at the moment - the world just seems like a lot.

a blog worth sharing

Turn Off The Radio - This is my all time favorite music blog. It's also probably the blog I've followed the longest as it's just so good. Every year some of my favorite listens come from Alan's posts.

  • The Daily Show's parody of the US President with the Japanese Prime Minister is spectacular.
  • No Kings protest violence was actually MAGA agitators. No surprise there.
  • In tailscale news:
    • An organization can now have multiple tailnets! I can think of a number of potential use cases.
    • There's a new feature called Services too that lets you expose services to the network which looks really cool.
  • Some private donors have stepped up to cover some of the gap in US AID cuts. It's something (but not enough).
  • Gofundme created a bunch of nonprofit donor pages without telling the nonprofits. They've walked it back from what I understand but wow. This site has more details about what to do if you are affected.

apps I'm checking out

  • Delta.chat: E2EE messaging app. Kind of like Signal but decentralized with email as a backbone. It works quite well and is really actively developed.
  • Anytype: I've had a thing for anytype for a long while. I initially joined the beta in early to mid 2022 I think. It wasn't quite developed enough at that point so I moved on. I recently though decided to self host my own instance and it's working so much better. It's feeling much more like I hoped it would a few years ago.
