The Interview

Can you share a bit about yourself with us?

I’m what you’d call a millennial—the last (and best, in my opinion) generation to grow up during the birth of modern technology. And let me tell you, what a time it was! From playing Oregon Trail on clunky school computers to those colorful, see-through iMacs in the library, and even learning the magic of crafting search queries on early Google, it felt like we were living in a revolution. The list of memories goes on, but it was truly an exciting time to come of age.

On the personal side, I’m a husband and a proud father of three amazing daughters (21, 18, and 12). If you’re wondering how I manage it all, trust me, I ask myself the same question—every day! But in all seriousness, they’re my world, and the chaos is always worth it. I’ve lived in Texas since 1999, but I don’t really consider it home. I was born and raised in Western Montana, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Waking up each day with those majestic peaks outside my window is something I’ll always miss.

I’ve always been a tech enthusiast. My love for technology started when we got our first computer running Windows 95. I spent countless hours on it, much to my frustration when a phone call would knock me offline (remember dial-up?). I eventually convinced my mom to get a dedicated phone line just for the internet—huge win! Over the years, my passion grew as I explored different operating systems, diving into Linux and macOS. These days, I’m a big Apple fan and fully immersed in the ecosystem.

Professionally, I’m the Head of MSP (Managed Service Provider) for a local IT company. We manage over 250 endpoints, taking care of everything from IT needs to network management and cybersecurity. Before this, I’ve worn many hats, working in banking, customer service, software development, and internet marketing/SEO. But IT has always been my true passion.

Right now, I’m pursuing a Bachelor’s in IT with a minor in Cybersecurity from the University of Phoenix. It’s been a journey, but I’ve always believed in continuing to learn and grow in a field I love. Technology is constantly evolving, and keeping up with it is both a challenge and a thrill.

That’s me in a nutshell—a millennial tech junkie, husband, father, and IT professional, chasing my passion and trying to make the most of every opportunity while staying grounded by the things that matter most.

What’s your favorite part of being a father?

“Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” This quote resonates deeply with me because fatherhood is full of such moments—those breathtaking experiences that make everything worthwhile.

My favorite part of being a father is witnessing my daughters grow into their own extraordinary individuals. It’s like having a front-row seat to a series of transformative journeys. Watching their personalities blossom, seeing their passions ignite, and feeling their confidence strengthen over time is a privilege I don’t take for granted. Each of my three daughters is unique, bringing her own light, laughter, and perspective to our family, making our home a richer, more vibrant place.

What fulfills me most is being the person they turn to—whether it’s for advice, encouragement, or simply to share a laugh. There’s a quiet joy in helping them navigate challenges, cheering them on as they chase their dreams, or just sitting together, swapping stories that end in fits of laughter. These are the moments when I’m reminded of the profound impact I can have as their father.

Fatherhood has also been a mirror, reflecting lessons back to me. It’s made me more patient, more understanding, and more present in every aspect of life. Through my actions, I aim to show them what love, strength, and responsibility look like, hoping they carry those values forward.

If I had to choose the best part, though, it’s the little things—the unexpected hugs, the inside jokes that only we understand, or hearing them say “Thanks, Dad” when I least expect it. It’s these small, heartfelt moments of connection that truly take my breath away and make being a father the most rewarding experience of my life.

What motivates you day to day?

My bills. LOL.

Seriously, though. That’s a question I’ve found myself reflecting on quite a bit, especially as I’ve gotten older and settled into my roles as a husband, a father of three amazing daughters, and someone who works hard in IT to provide for my family. The answer isn’t one single thing—it’s a combination of purpose, responsibility, and love that keeps me moving forward.

First and foremost, my family is my biggest motivator. My wife and daughters are my world, and everything I do is with them in mind. Being a husband and father isn’t just a role—it’s an identity, a calling. I wake up every day wanting to be the best version of myself for them. Whether it’s providing for them financially, supporting them emotionally, or just being present when they need me, their happiness and well-being drive my actions. The thought of giving my girls a stable, loving home and showing them what a good father and partner looks like is something I take a lot of pride in.

Providing for my family is also a huge part of what motivates me. I work in IT, which can be demanding and sometimes exhausting, but I remind myself that every project I complete and every hour I put in is building a better future for my family. It’s about more than just paying the bills—it’s about creating opportunities for my daughters, making sure they never feel like they’re missing out on the things they need, and giving them the tools to chase their dreams. Knowing that I’m working toward their future gives even the toughest days meaning.

On a personal level, I’m also motivated by the desire to grow and improve. I’ve always been a bit of an IT nerd, and I find satisfaction in problem-solving and learning new things. Technology changes fast, and I enjoy staying on top of it, not only because it helps me in my career but also because I want to set an example for my daughters about the importance of continuous learning and adaptability. Showing them that you can love what you do, while always striving to get better at it, is a lesson I hope will stick with them.

Finally, there’s the legacy I want to leave behind. When I think about my daughters growing up and the kind of people I want them to be, I realize that starts with me. I want to show them how to be kind, hardworking, and resilient. I want my wife to feel loved and appreciated every day because I know that when we’re strong as a team, our whole family thrives. Knowing that my actions, no matter how small, shape the lives of the people I love most is incredibly motivating.

At the end of the day, it’s the love I have for my family and the responsibility I feel to provide for them and support them that keeps me going. Life isn’t always easy, but when I think about the people I’m doing it all for, I’m reminded that every effort is worth it. That’s what motivates me.

We are all different. Keeping in mind your context and mine (I’m a white cis-het American dude in his 40s) what is one thing you want me to know?

One thing I’d want you to know is that I’m doing my best to live a life rooted in purpose and connection. As a husband and father of three daughters, my world revolves around being present and dependable for the people I love most. That means juggling work in IT—a field I’m deeply passionate about—while still finding time to be the kind of dad my girls can look up to and the kind of partner my wife deserves.

I’ve also come to realize how much the little things matter—whether it’s sharing a laugh with my kids, tackling a problem at work, or just pausing to appreciate the beauty of a Rocky Mountain sunrise in my memories. Life moves fast, and while I’m no expert, I’ve learned the importance of staying grounded in what really matters: relationships, growth, and making the most of each day.

Ultimately, I’d want you to know that while our paths are different, there’s a shared understanding in being someone who strives to balance responsibility, ambition, and the drive to be better for the people around us. At the end of the day, it’s not about being perfect, but about showing up and doing your best.

What are three favorites? (It can be anything like food, books, media, etc; share a few sentences about each though and each one can be a different category, ie, a favorite food, a favorite book and a favorite album)

I’ve always struggled with favorite-type questions, to be honest! I guess I just don’t keep track of favorites or have a tough time narrowing things down. But here are three that come to mind:

Food: Mexican food is hands-down my favorite. Whether it’s tacos, enchiladas, or a big plate of fajitas, I can never go wrong with it. There’s just something about the bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and spice that always hits the spot. Plus, chips and salsa are basically a perfect snack anytime!

Book: I’ve had a hard time with reading over the years, but I’ve recently started getting back into it. Right now, I’m reading Down Range by Taylor Moore, and I’m really enjoying it. It’s a gripping thriller that’s kept me hooked so far. (You can check it out here.) Getting back into reading has been a nice change of pace.

Music: I don’t really have a favorite genre or artist—I’m pretty much into all kinds of music, except rap. My playlist is usually a mix of everything from rock to country to pop. I like having variety in what I listen to since it really depends on my mood. Whether I’m working, driving, or relaxing, there’s always something that fits the moment.

There you have it—not exactly definitive “favorites,” but these are some things I enjoy most!

What is one quote that you can’t get out of your head?

“Do or do not, there is no try” - Yoda

How did you find omg.lol and what are your favorite parts?

I got introduced to omg.lol through one of Robb’s (of course) Mastodon posts, can’t remember which one now. At the time I was using direct.me for all the social links and Jekyll for my blog. As I looked into omg.lol I quickly become interested in it because of how everything was all right there, in one place. I have OCD, probably should have mentioned that above LOL. Having tools, etc. in multiple places drives me nuts. Omg.lol was the perfect fit!

Favorite parts…I would say all of them! I use pretty much everything Adam has to use on the service. I have the Now page, the Profile, and the Weblog. I even use the statuslog and pipe them over to my Mastodon account.

What is one thing you’ve discovered that someone else created that you’d like to promote?

I’ve always admired Robb Knight’s website—in my opinion, it’s a true masterpiece. The design is stunning, with a seamless aesthetic that ties everything together beautifully. Beyond the visuals, his content is incredibly helpful for anyone involved in the IndieWeb. I’ve personally benefited from his work and used many of his ideas. I’m truly grateful!
